Asked to Adapt a Classic Play, This Writer Rethought Her Life
As she sought the truth for her characters on the page, Mara Vélez Meléndez’s real self began to emerge. Now she’s making her Off Broadway debut.
“Soho Rep isn’t the last word in downtown experimental theater: Better than that, it’s often one of the first words, championing major voices at key points in their careers. Its astounding list of alums includes Richard Maxwell, Young Jean Lee, Adam Bock, Annie Baker, Nature Theater of Oklahoma, David Adjmi, Lucas Hnath, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Anne Washburn, Aleshea Harris and Jackie Sibblies Drury (whose Fairview, which premiered there, won the Pulitzer Prize). And Soho Rep’s low ticket prices, including 99¢ Sundays, help keep some of the city’s bravest, boldest and wildest theater within the reach of all New Yorkers. ”
-Time Out New York
Soho Rep is a civic theater that produces ambitious, innovative new works by radical theatermakers that go on to future productions around the world.
At Soho Rep, we are grateful for the high vaccination rates across New York City as well as the recent and meaningful decreases to COVID-19 positivity rates and hospitalizations. However, given understandings that are currently in place with artists, production crews, our union partners, and ticket holders, we are currently requiring that theatergoers provide proof of vaccination and wear a mask in order to attend our public programs.
All audience members for these performances and presentations will be required to show proof of vaccination via the Excelsior Pass, the NYC Covid Safe Pass, or a copy or photo of your CDC vaccination card. Additionally, we will require that masks be worn over your nose and mouth at all times inside our theater. We will provide you with a free mask if you forget yours at home.
These policies are subject to change. We will be working together with our colleagues, and with our union partners, to update them as public health guidelines continue to evolve. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
